Amelia Furman: Fellow Etsy Artist and Mother

I love Etsy and seeing all the wonderful ideas and people that are there.
I came across this wonderful shop called: Amelia Furman

http://www.etsy.com/shop/ameliafurman

There was something so great about her work, I am in love with the layering and the fact that she covers the whole piece with an epoxy resin was so cool to me. The look of glass. here is my favorite piece of hers:
Being a mom and having my name start with an H...I couldn't help it!

I had messaged her to see if she would be kind enough to share some of her techniques...
 guess what!?
She was so sweet and gave me step by step on what I wanted to know.

Her first step is to make a collage

In the end she has a beautiful painting with wonderful hints of the collage showing under.
(To see the full process check out her site)

Sometimes on Etsy you run into people who rather not bother with you unless your going to buy.
I am so thankful to her for being open.
So I thought maybe it would be nice to share a little about her to all of you.
Please enjoy and visit her shop on Etsy!

Also here is her main web site page: www.ameliafurman.com

Bio:
Amelia grew up in rural, central Pennsylvania amidst pastoral scenes of farms, fields, and forests. Nature has captured her attention for as long as she can remember. Visual arts were also a dominant force in Amelia’s life from an early age. After graduating with a degree in visual art from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2003, Amelia began to explore how she could use paint to express her love of the natural world.

Amelia’s background in printmaking and illustration has heavily influenced the direction of her work. Ms. Furman works in a combination of paper collage, text and thin layers of acrylic paint. Using a selection of documents, vintage images, handwritten text, and symbols associated with the painted image, Amelia reminds the viewer that places and objects have many layers of meaning, memory, and beauty.

Amelia displays her work throughout Pennsylvania in traditional and non-traditional venues and her works can be found in private collections nationwide. Ms. Furman resides outside of Philadelphia with her husband and son.

Thank you for your time.
Share the love and meet another wonderful artist and mother!

On the Right Track!

Hey everyone,
So today I was just messing around on my computer checking out my stats on my Etsy...
And out of no where as my eyes followed the categories I see a big #1...
I do a double take and there...it was...

1 sold

Now I have sold stuff on Etsy...Like tiles, a few custom shoes, and odds and ends.
But for some strange reason I just have been feeling down about not getting any of my new art work out. It makes you wonder if its not really that great, maybe your new style isn't as important as you thought, or that maybe paintings are too hard to sell on Etsy.

But all the doubt was washed away with one sold piece.
Why did this piece make me feel validation?
I just love this piece, It is one I will miss having hung in on my wall.
Its one that make me feel like I could make it as an artist with more than just shoes.

And! To top off the excitement, The person who bought it had such kind things to say.
He told me that he loves my stuff! (ahhh I have a fan!)
He said that he was eyeing another piece too! I know I know don't get to excited,
But its  hard because he was so nice and funny about it.
He mentioned that he had to have it, that it will be his, all in time! then he put: (insert evil laugh)

Thanks art supports for rocking it and making a silly artist and mom feel like all her hard work is paying off!

What have I become!

I never thought I would become that person that gets caught up in making art because I needed to sell! I was the one that felt like I needed to make it so I could stay mentally and emotionally well.
Because of my new life changes (having a daughter, a husband, and being out of work, and my husband having to go from job to job) I recently have lost my way!

I fear that. I got disparate and started taking any art job I could or thought I could do. It really made me pretty overwhelmed and sad in the long run and to add to that it's not like I gained the money I needed anyway. What have I done! sigh I need to focus on making my art because I have a wonderful idea or because I feel something strong pulling to create. I keep leaving behind the true meaning of my self.

Fear leads me.
How do people stay close and keep in touch with one a nothers feelings and needs when all you can think about is keeping your head above water. The worst part about it is that we are lucky with all we have.

I think the famous monster is creeping in my ear and yelling at me. I feel like I have this need to be found...but truthfully if I was "found" what would it be for? It's so hard to hold on to ONE thing. I like doing so many things. I always thought I was a lazy person but truthfully my fault is that I am a perfectionist in a way, If its not right I just don't do it.

Practice is needed in my sewing!
Pride is needed in my shoes!
Love in needed in my paintings!
and I must ABOVE ALL
put more Time, Honesty, and Faith in my family!

My Art was good and strong when I was.

I feel deflated and like I drag my hands to the table.
What am I missing?

I talk and talk and talk about my issues, so change them!
I try and try and try to get somewhere, even though I feel my self going in circles!

ITS TIME TO TAKE CARE OF MY SELF FOR A FEW DAYS AND FOCUS ON THE REAL HEART IN MY ART!

Art Snob!

Welcome,

I am starting a small facebook group called Art Attack.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/461402853871930/
join us if you like to take on this adventure!

I have been sitting here thinking about all the people I know that do really great things.
Some shot photos, some bake and decorate cakes, some make websites and logos, there are painters and people that can sew some amazing things!

I want there to be a way to show off our websites, stores, craft shows, art shows, logos, blogs, and whatever you/they want!

Its hard to make it in the world of art no mater what type it is or how popular.
I think that with a wild group of people together we can reach new places and learn new trades. Someday when the world is whatever it ends up being how many of you will know how to sew? cook? or paint?

These great things are becoming dead and old fashion, at the same time the old fashion things are coming back stronger than ever...but because of its trendy ways it costs a lot of money to learn these things.

So lets get together and trade for lessons or just be kind a share what we know.
have a question about something art like...you googled and looked and can't find it! Well I bet you one of the people in the group might know...and if they don't I bet they will be willing to learn with you.

Experiment with these people!
Take these people and find new inspiration. Some of you live far and others are right next to each other and don't even know it.

Become Friends in real life!
This is from an amazing art class I had...It started my idea for this group page!
Thanks guys!

I hope that this group can help us make some art shows happen, find some new type of art we like, or help us with sales and finding new customers! lets all reach out and just help another artist!

Thanks everyone

Multi Me...Bipolar

The truth about me as an artist is that I have many me's in the room as I create. Its not like multiple personality or anything...
But I go through my emotions and feel out so many feelings all at once and one at a time. This may sound impossible or distracting.
And yes sometimes it is distracting having feelings of super happy excitement and euphoria, then dashing down to uncertainty's and fear. I created this little strange photo arrangement to show you just a few of what I live with.

  1. Happy, euphoric, excited, proud, certain, sure, real, hyper, and busy
  2. Anger, Rage, overwhelmed, tired, hungry, all together a big middle finger to all!
  3. Sad, Depressed, ashamed, disappointed, pathetic, not worth anything, and crushed
  4. paranoid, freaked out, worried, scared, trapped, alone, zoned, numb, and stuck

I do not write this to make you feel sorry for me, I write this so you can better understand that who I am greatly influences everything around me. My art, my life, my child, my husband, my cat, hell...even the weather...hee hee.

I want you to know that this is something real and its not as simple as just saying hello I have bipolar. There is yoga, meditation, vitamins, medications, support from friends and family...there is so so much that goes into keeping someone in some kind of balance.

If you have bipolar don't worry your not alone. If you want to talk just do it. sometimes people will over react and say..."whats wrong with you! why are you letting so many know you have this?" "aww are you sad...we all get sad just don't kill your self" "chill out it's not that hard" "your doing well...just keep your chin up" there is endless things both good and bad...or even harmful people will say to you.

and...
at times you may say these things to your self. you will fight with your self all the time, every second. You will ask your self things, you will over think things, you will worry your self to a frenzy. Its hard and feels impossible to calm down or get your head together and "act like an adult"

Artist are said to be selfish and child like. well...I both artist and bipolar...so yes sometimes
I ACT LIKE A BIG BABY!
but what you need to understand is I really can't help it at times. I feel lost, alone, unsure, and like I am failing. I know that is a "normal" feeling everyone has. When I feel that way it is to the extreme.

Just understand I do my best. My issues are here and I am aware of them. Change is not easy.
I know that I must stop trying to prove my self to everyone and prove my self to ME!
I have learned to love most of my sides...The one that is the hardest is the controlling angry resentful me.

One step at a time.

My advice...
"Find something you love that your good at that you can escape to and just feel who you are and know that you are "normal" you are who you are."
"Multi Me"

Maybe this won't help anyone...maybe just one stranger will read this or maybe someone will read this and tell me I am wrong for sharing such personal stuff.

But it is real. Why should I "stay in the closet" with my mental illness?
So you will like me more?
So you wont have to really know?
So I don't become a "crazy" person to others...

Bipolar may not be simple...But this blog post is.
Its just me
An artist, at home mom, wife, and college student...
Expressing her self.
